OCR: The Skull Bisected and Sectioned 1489, pen and ink over traces of black chalk 7 3/e x 5 1/2 in. (18.7 x 14 cm) Windsor, Royal Library 19058v Partly in an effort to understand the location of the sensus communis, 24 the spot where the soul was said to reside and all senses meet, Leonardo made a series of studies of the human skull. Rendered with exceptional artistry and care, this drawing, accurate to this day, signals the intense precision that later came to be expected in anatomical illustration. Here Leonardo is concerned chiefly with the relative depths of facial cavities. In a side note, he describes and counts the teeth, a point of confusion in his day that had been compounded by Aristotle's assertion that women had fewer teeth than men. 210
